K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, is one of Australia’s most iconic natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located just 2 hours north of Sunshine Beach, it’s one of the most popular day trips and overnight adventures for guests staying at La Mer.
What Makes K’gari Special
K’gari is the world’s largest sand island, stretching 122 kilometres along the Queensland coast. Its extraordinary landscapes include ancient rainforests growing in sand, crystal clear freshwater lakes, coloured sand cliffs and 75 Mile Beach — a working highway along the island’s eastern coast.
Tour Options from Noosa
Several operators run guided 4WD tours to K’gari departing from the Sunshine Coast. Tours typically include visits to Lake McKenzie, the Maheno shipwreck, Eli Creek and the Pinnacles coloured sand cliffs. Full day and multi-day tours are available.
Getting There
The most popular departure point is Rainbow Beach, approximately 1.5 hours drive from La Mer Sunshine Beach. Some operators also offer pick-up from Noosa. A valid vehicle permit is required for self-drive visitors.
Tips for Your Visit
Book your tour in advance during school holidays and peak season. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Dingo safety awareness is essential — maintain distance and never feed the wildlife.
